Terri: As we have discussed, I did not know Dave well but enjoyed his company at Hardrock two years ago. I was truly shocked to learn of his death and I was greatly affected by our conversation, and your tears, a few days after Dave's suicide. You know, it's even difficult to type that word. Thank you for your blog and there is no doubt in my mind that it WILL help someone out there. I am forever greatful for your help in getting me off the couch and to my first adventure race in 2006! Your pal, Jack

Terri,
Your blog post on your friends who died from suicide, your reflections on death and call to support those who may be in need is by far the most important holiday message I have seen so far.

I have thought a lot about suicide (not for myself, thank god) but because some close friends have considered it and I have lost acquaintances in the community, former schoolmates to it.

In fact, it was the suicide attempt and subsequent hospitalization of my then-boyfriend back in 1997 that led me to channel all my emotions from that trauma into triathlon training with you at the first clinic.

Americans are scared of death in general, and suicide in particular is a taboo topic. So the more people talk about it, like you have, the better it helps to shine light and give hope to those who are suffering from depression, suicidal thoughts or the loss of a loved one.

All,

If anyone is looking for a resource for help with addiction, depression, self-injury or thoughts
of suicide, To Write Love On Her Arms is a terrific organization that is worth checking out and is a bridge to help...not a 1-800 line or trained professionals. You are not alone! Not by a long shot.

The vision is the possibility that your best days are ahead.

The vision is the possibility that we're more loved than we'll ever know.

The vision is hope, and hope is real.

You are not alone, and this is not the end of your story.
